Stictococcus formicarius is a scale insect species belonging to the family Stictococcidae within the order Hemiptera. This pest is primarily recognized for its impact on tropical perennial crops, particularly in African regions. The name of the insect reflects its complex mutualistic relationship with ants, which protect the scale colonies in exchange for honeydew, a sugary substance secreted by the insects.

The host range of Stictococcus formicarius is centered on coffee trees (Coffea spp.) and cocoa trees. The scale insects are typically found on young twigs, branches, and petioles. They tend to cluster in groups, often hidden under soil covers or debris constructed by attending ants, which makes visual detection and manual control challenging during the early stages of infestation.

The biological cycle of this pest is adapted to warm, humid environments, enabling year-round reproduction. Adult females are sessile, remaining attached to the plant surface. The first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, are the primary agents of dispersal. They move actively across the host plant to find suitable feeding sites, where they eventually settle and develop their characteristic protective coverings.

The damage caused by Stictococcus formicarius is significant in terms of plant vigor and crop yield. By continuously extracting phloem sap, the insects cause stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and premature senescence of plant tissues. Furthermore, the accumulation of honeydew on the leaves fosters the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and interferes with the plant's photosynthetic process, ultimately reducing productivity.
