Description

Stictococcus pujoli is a member of the Stictococcidae family within the Coccoidea superfamily. These insects are recognized as significant pests in tropical agricultural systems, known for their ability to thrive in warm, humid climates and cause cumulative damage to host tree species.

The primary hosts for this pest include cocoa trees (Theobroma cacao) and various other tropical plants. The insect selectively feeds on the phloem sap of the plant, often colonizing the bark, stems, and younger branches, which disrupts the tree's nutrient transport system and overall vigor.

The life cycle involves multiple developmental stages, including egg, nymph (crawler), and adult. Adult females are typically sessile, protected by a waxy or sclerotized test that provides significant defense against environmental stressors and many conventional chemical treatments. This sedentary behavior makes the timing of interventions crucial.

Damage caused by Stictococcus pujoli is twofold: direct feeding damage and the secondary effects of honeydew secretion. The accumulation of honeydew on the leaves and stems provides an ideal substrate for the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and inhibits the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, leading to stunted growth and reduced yields.
