Stictococcus tuberculatus is a member of the family Stictococcidae within the order Hemiptera. This insect is primarily recognized as an agricultural pest in the tropical regions of Africa. It is specialized in colonizing woody plants, particularly those of significant economic value, leading to persistent challenges for local cocoa farmers and agricultural researchers.

The primary host for this species is the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). The insect typically colonizes the bark, young stems, and pods of the plant. Its wide distribution within tropical plantations is often assisted by mutualistic relationships with various ant species, which protect the insects from predators in exchange for honeydew, a sugary secretion produced by the pest during feeding.

The life cycle of Stictococcus tuberculatus is adapted to constant tropical temperatures. The females are sedentary and cryptic, blending into the texture of the host plant bark, which makes detection difficult during the early stages of infestation. The nymphs, or crawlers, are the mobile phase responsible for colonizing new shoots and neighboring trees, facilitating a steady expansion of the infested area.
