The red-brown longhorn beetle (Stictoleptura fulva) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This species is commonly known as a wood-boring insect that occupies forest ecosystems and gardens, specifically targeting weakened or dying deciduous trees.

The beetle affects various deciduous species, including oaks, beeches, and fruit trees within the garden environment. It is typically attracted to trees that have already lost their vigor due to environmental stressors, diseases, or structural damage, making these trees ideal sites for egg-laying and larval development.

The life cycle begins when adult beetles emerge in the summer. While adults feed on nectar and pollen from flowers, causing no harm, the larvae are the destructive stage. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the bark and penetrate the wood, where they create intricate tunnels while consuming the inner tissues of the tree.

The damage caused by the larvae is significant, as they compromise the vascular system of the host plant. These feeding tunnels disrupt nutrient and water flow throughout the tree. Symptoms of an infestation include canopy dieback, yellowing leaves, the presence of boreholes on the trunk, and eventual decline or death of the tree.
