Strangalepta

Strangalepta is a genus of longhorn beetles belonging to the family Cerambycidae within the order Coleoptera. While adult beetles are often seen on flowers feeding on pollen, their larval stages are significant wood-boring pests that can severely affect the health and structural integrity of various tree species.

These pests primarily target weakened, stressed, or aging trees. Common host plants include a variety of deciduous trees, such as apple, pear, plum, oak, and birch. In environments where trees are neglected or stressed by drought, Strangalepta populations can increase, leading to more frequent infestations.

The life cycle involves the female laying eggs into crevices or existing wounds in the tree bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the inner bark and cambium layers. As they feed and grow, they create complex tunnel networks, which disrupt the flow of nutrients and water from the roots to the canopy.

The damage caused by larvae is often insidious and may go unnoticed until the tree shows visible symptoms. Signs of infestation include yellowing leaves, dieback of individual branches, and the presence of frass or sap weeping from holes in the bark. Severe infestations can eventually girdle and kill the tree.

Effective management requires a proactive approach centered on tree health. Key control measures include ensuring proper irrigation, fertilization, and structural pruning. It is essential to remove and properly dispose of dead or dying wood to eliminate breeding sites. During the adult flight season, selective insecticide treatments on the bark can help reduce the potential for new egg-laying.
