Strangalia

Strangalia is a genus of longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae) belonging to the order Coleoptera. These insects are classified as wood-boring pests, as their larvae stage is spent entirely inside the wood of various tree species, making them significant threats to forest health and orchard productivity.

These pests primarily target weakened, stressed, or dying deciduous and coniferous trees. They are frequently found in forests, parks, and fruit orchards. The larvae thrive in wood that has begun to decay or is structurally compromised, digging deep tunnels that undermine the health of the host plant.

The biology of Strangalia follows a complete metamorphosis life cycle. Adult females lay eggs in bark crevices or wounds in the tree trunk. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the wood and remain there for several years, depending on the environmental conditions and the quality of the wood as a food source.

The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by extensive tunneling through the sapwood and heartwood. This activity not only compromises the structural integrity of the tree but also allows for the entry of various fungal pathogens, which can accelerate the decline and eventual death of the host tree.

To effectively manage and prevent infestations, the following measures are recommended:

• Regular sanitation of forests by removing and destroying infested or dead timber.
• Clearing debris and fallen wood from orchards to reduce breeding sites.
• Applying insecticides to tree trunks during the adult beetle emergence period.
• Improving tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation to resist infestations.
• Using pheromone or visual traps to monitor and reduce local beetle populations.
