Description
Systematic position. Strepsicrates ejectana is a species of moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. Known commonly as a leaf-rolling moth, it is recognized for its larval stage, which feeds on the foliage of specific host plants, causing measurable economic damage in forestry and nursery sectors.
Host plants. This pest primarily targets species within the Myrtaceae family. Its presence is most frequently documented on Eucalyptus trees. The larvae prefer young, tender growth, which makes seedlings and young saplings particularly vulnerable to infestation during the growing season.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults are nocturnal and often go unnoticed until infestation signs become visible. Females oviposit on the underside of leaves or near growth tips, and after hatching, the larvae immediately seek shelter within rolled or tied leaves.
Damage and severity. The larvae exhibit characteristic leaf-rolling behavior. Using silk webbing, they pull leaf edges together to create a secure chamber, which protects them from both predators and environmental factors. Inside these structures, they feed on leaf tissues, causing skeletonization and stunting the growth of the infested shoots, which can lead to significant biomass loss.
Protection measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for controlling Strepsicrates ejectana. Strategies include:
- Monitoring adult flight activity using pheromone traps.
- Manual removal of infested leaf rolls in small-scale settings.
- Application of selective insecticides during the early larval instar stages.
- Preservation of natural biological control agents that predate or parasitize the larvae.
