Systematic position. The African ostrich (lat. Struthio camelus) belongs to the order Struthioniformes and the family Struthionidae. While widely recognized as a farmed species, these flightless birds can act as significant pests in agricultural landscapes if they breach fences or inhabit areas near cultivated farmland, posing a unique challenge to field management.

Damaged crops. Ostriches are opportunistic foragers with a broad diet. They pose a significant threat to grain fields, corn crops, sunflowers, and vegetable gardens. Their presence in orchards and vineyards can also lead to the destruction of fruit and young saplings, as they consume both foliage and ripe produce, causing substantial economic loss for agricultural producers.

Biology and life cycle. Ostriches are terrestrial birds known for their significant size, speed, and social behavior. They are highly active during daylight hours and cover vast territories in search of vegetation. Due to their rapid development and long lifespan, populations of ostriches in areas adjacent to crops require careful management to prevent consistent incursions into fertile agricultural lands.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The damage caused by ostriches is both dietary and mechanical. Beyond consuming significant portions of the crop, their heavy weight and large feet lead to the trampling of plants, soil compaction, and the destruction of irrigation systems. This level of physical disruption often leaves fields severely damaged, reducing yields and requiring replanting in affected zones.

Protection measures. Managing ostrich activity involves implementing robust exclusion and deterrence strategies:

  • Installing high-tensile, tall perimeter fencing to prevent bird entry.
  • Utilizing electric fencing systems as an effective deterrent against large birds.
  • Implementing automated sound-based deterrents to disturb their feeding behavior.
  • Maintaining regular patrol of field boundaries during the most vulnerable stages of crop growth.
