Common starling

The Common starling (Sturnus vulgaris) belongs to the order Passeriformes and the Sturnidae family. While these birds are beneficial during the spring breeding season for consuming insect pests, they become significant agricultural threats during the harvest season when large flocks cause extensive economic losses to orchards and vineyards.

Their diet shifts to fruits and berries as they ripen, making vineyards, sweet cherry orchards, peach groves, and commercial berry plantations (such as blueberries and strawberries) prime targets. The starling's habit of feeding in dense flocks allows them to consume or damage substantial quantities of high-value fruit in a very short period, often devastating the expected yield.

In terms of biology and life cycle, starlings demonstrate complex social behavior and mobility. They nest in cavities and rely on insect protein early in the season, which helps control ground-dwelling larvae. However, once the juveniles fledge, the population aggregates into large, mobile flocks that traverse landscapes, actively seeking carbohydrate-rich food sources in agricultural zones.

The damage is twofold: direct consumption of the fruit and physiological damage that promotes secondary decay. Pecked fruits are susceptible to colonization by fungi, yeasts, and bacteria, leading to rot. Furthermore, injured fruit attracts other pests like wasps and vinegar flies, which exacerbate the degradation of the harvest quality and make the remaining crop unmarketable.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach to mitigate damage. Protective netting remains the most successful physical barrier against bird attacks. In addition to physical exclusion, growers utilize non-lethal deterrents such as acoustic bird distress call systems, visual scare tactics like predator decoys or holographic tape, and specialized propane cannons to protect larger acreage.
