Description

The Common Starling (lat. Sturnus vulgaris) belongs to the order Passeriformes and the family Sturnidae. While these birds provide ecological benefits by consuming insects during the breeding season, they become major agricultural pests when they shift their diet to fruit and grain crops during the harvest stage.

They pose a significant threat to various orchards and berry plantations. Common starlings are particularly destructive to vineyards, cherry and sweet cherry orchards, and strawberry fields. Additionally, they can cause substantial losses in sunflower and cereal fields by pecking at seeds during the milk and soft dough stages.

The biology of the starling involves complex social structures and the formation of massive flocks. As birds become more mobile after the nesting period, the population pressure on crops increases significantly. These birds are highly adaptable and display intelligent feeding behavior, quickly identifying high-yield food sources.

The damage caused is primarily mechanical; birds pierce the skin of fruits and berries, making them susceptible to rot, fermentation, and various fungal infections. This damage renders the produce unmarketable. Furthermore, the sheer size of the flocks can lead to the total loss of a crop within a very short timeframe if no deterrents are in place.

Effective protection strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Physical barriers, such as anti-bird netting, remain the most reliable defense for valuable crops. In larger commercial settings, farmers use bio-acoustic systems that replicate alarm calls, propane cannons for periodic noise deterrents, and reflective visual repellents to disturb the flocks.
