Description

Stygia is a genus of moths belonging to the Cossidae family, commonly known as goat moths or carpenter moths. As a plant pest, it presents a significant challenge to growers due to the endophagous nature of its larvae, which live and feed within the stems and trunks of host plants.

The primary damage is caused to various woody and herbaceous species. Larvae bore galleries into the inner tissues, effectively destroying the vascular system of the plant. This structural damage disrupts nutrient and water transport, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and potential death of the affected plant or branch.

The biological cycle of Stygia is characterized by a prolonged larval stage. Female moths typically oviposit in crevices or near the base of the plant. Once hatched, the larvae immediately begin tunneling. The lifecycle can take over a year to complete, depending on environmental conditions and the specific host plant availability.

Identification of the pest is often based on external signs: accumulation of frass (larval excrement) at the base of the plant or around entry holes, sap bleeding from the bark, and canopy thinning. The economic impact is significant in orchards and nurseries, where infested plants lose market value or must be removed.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for Stygia control. This includes early detection, destruction of heavily infested plant parts, and chemical interventions. Systemic insecticides are sometimes used, though their efficacy depends on correct timing, specifically targeting the period before the larvae penetrate deep into the woody tissues.
