Description

Systematic position: Suidasia nesbitti is a species of acarid mite belonging to the order Acariformes and the family Suidasiidae. It is widely recognized as a significant pest of stored agricultural products, commonly found in granaries, warehouses, and milling facilities worldwide.

Affected crops: This mite primarily infests stored cereals, oilseeds, flour, bran, and various dry food products. It thrives in high-moisture organic matter, making it a persistent threat to processed feed, mixed grains, and stored pulses that lack proper climate control.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, larva, protonymph, (optional) hypopus, tritonymph, and adult stages. Its development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, preferring temperatures between 25-30 °C and relative humidity levels exceeding 70%. In response to unfavorable conditions, the mite can form a hypopus stage, which is resistant to desiccation and environmental stress.

Damage and harmfulness: The pest damages stored seeds by feeding on the germ, which drastically reduces germination rates. Furthermore, mites contaminate products with their exuviae, excrement, and dead bodies, leading to the development of off-odors and secondary mold growth. Heavy infestations often lead to grain heating and significant loss of nutritional value.

Control measures: Management relies on maintaining proper storage conditions, specifically ensuring grain moisture content stays below 13%. Preventive measures include cleaning storage facilities thoroughly before new grain intake and maintaining structural integrity. If infestation occurs, chemical control via fumigation with phosphine-based products or structural treatments with approved insecticides is necessary.
