Description

Systematic position: The mite Suidasia pontifica belongs to the phylum Arthropoda, class Arachnida, order Acariformes, and family Acaridae. It is a significant pest of stored products, commonly encountered in grain storage facilities, flour mills, and food warehouses globally.

Host range: This species is a generalist feeder (polyphagous). It infests a wide range of stored goods, including wheat, rice, oilseeds, dried fruits, flour, animal feed, and processed legumes. The mite thrives in products with high moisture content, where it can rapidly establish populations and cause extensive damage.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Suidasia pontifica proceeds through stages including egg, larva, protonymph, hypopus (a facultative resting stage), tritonymph, and adult. Optimal conditions for development are high humidity (above 70%) and temperatures between 25–30°C. Under favorable conditions, the mite can complete its life cycle in as little as 10–14 days.

Damage and pest status: The damage caused by these mites includes not only direct consumption of the product but also severe contamination with feces, cast skins, and decomposition products. Mites often facilitate the growth of mold, rendering the grain unsuitable for human or animal consumption. Furthermore, massive infestations result in a pungent off-odor and the caking of stored materials like flour or grain.

Control measures: The primary strategy for management is maintaining low moisture levels (below 13–14%) and cool temperatures in storage areas. Essential practices include regular sanitation of warehouse facilities, thorough equipment disinfection, and strict quality control of incoming produce. In cases of severe infestation, fumigation with phosphine-based products is the standard industry control method.
