Description
Sybra alternans is a species of longhorn beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae and the subfamily Lamiinae. As a wood-boring insect, it represents a significant risk to the health of woody plants, utilizing their vascular tissues as a primary food source for its larvae.
This pest mainly infests a variety of tropical and subtropical woody crops. In agricultural settings, it is commonly observed on fruit trees and ornamental shrubs. Trees that are already weakened by abiotic stressors, such as drought or physical damage, are particularly susceptible to colonization by this beetle.
The life cycle of the insect follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult females deposit eggs into crevices of the bark or into pre-bored wounds. The resulting larvae tunnel into the wood, consuming cambium and heartwood, which effectively girdles the branches and disrupts the flow of nutrients throughout the plant.
The economic impact of Sybra alternans is primarily due to the internal damage caused by larvae. Symptoms of an infestation include dieback of branches, stunted growth, and the presence of frass at the base of the tree or near exit holes. Severe infestations can eventually lead to the total mortality of the host tree if left unmanaged.

Key strategies include regular monitoring for initial signs of infestation and the immediate removal and destruction of infested branches to prevent further spread.
