Systematic position: Symmerista belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Notodontidae (prominent moths). These insects are known in forestry for their larvae, which are specialized defoliators capable of causing significant damage to deciduous tree species over large geographical areas.
Host plants and damage symptoms: These pests primarily target oak (Quercus) and other deciduous hardwoods. The larvae feed on the foliage, initially skeletonizing leaves and eventually consuming entire leaf blades except for the midribs. This massive removal of foliage inhibits the tree's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis.
