Symmerista leucitys is a species of moth belonging to the family Notodontidae. Commonly known in its larval stage as a significant defoliator, this insect is a recognized pest in deciduous forest ecosystems. The primary hosts for this species include various deciduous tree species, with a strong preference for beech (Fagus) and maple (Acer). The larvae feed gregariously, initially skeletonizing the leaves, which can lead to significant aesthetic and physiological damage if the infestation levels are high enough to cause total canopy defoliation.
