Potato tuber moth

Symmetrischema tangolias

Description

Symmetrischema tangolias, commonly known as the potato tuber moth, is a destructive pest of solanaceous crops. Taxonomically, it belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. This moth is a major threat that causes significant economic damage to potato production both in the field and during storage.

The primary hosts of this pest include potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and various wild solanaceous weeds. Larvae mine the leaves and burrow into the tubers or stems, causing plants to wilt and rendering tubers unmarketable. The damage is particularly severe in warm climates where the moth can reproduce rapidly.

The life cycle of the moth consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. In favorable temperatures, the life cycle is completed in about a month, allowing for several generations per season. Females lay eggs near the eyes of tubers or on foliage, and newly hatched larvae immediately penetrate the plant tissue to feed.

Damage symptoms on tubers include shallow, web-lined tunnels filled with dark excrement. Secondary infections by bacteria and fungi often occur at the damage sites, leading to rapid rotting of the harvested produce. In foliage, the larvae create mines between the leaf surfaces, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity and ultimately lowers yields.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

  • Planting certified, pest-free seed potatoes.
  • Deep plowing to bury pupae and reduce the overwintering population.
  • Hilling up potato plants to ensure tubers remain covered by soil.
  • Early harvesting followed by rapid cooling of tubers in storage.
  • Using pheromone traps for monitoring and applying authorized insecticides when thresholds are exceeded.
