Coriander seed wasp

The coriander seed wasp (Systole coriandri) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Eurytomidae. It is considered one of the most destructive pests for coriander (Coriandrum sativum) crops, as its entire larval development occurs inside the developing seeds of the host plant.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily restricted to the reproductive organs of the plant. The female wasp deposits its eggs directly into the young ovaries. Once the larvae hatch, they feed exclusively on the interior of the seeds, consuming the embryo and endosperm. This results in hollowed-out seeds that lack viability and possess reduced essential oil content.

The life cycle of Systole coriandri is synchronized with the phenology of the coriander plant. The pest overwinters as mature larvae inside the infested seeds left in the field debris or storage facilities. In the spring, the larvae pupate, and the adult wasps emerge, typically aligning their reproductive period with the flowering stage of the coriander crop.

Symptoms of infestation are often not visible until the wasps emerge, leaving characteristic circular exit holes on the surface of the seeds. Because the larvae remain hidden inside the seed coat, damage can be easily overlooked until harvest. Heavy infestations can lead to substantial yield losses, significantly affecting the quality of the harvested produce.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for controlling the coriander seed wasp. These include:

• Strict crop rotation to reduce local pest pressure.
• Deep plowing in autumn to bury infested crop residues and prevent successful emergence.
• The use of clean, certified seeds for planting.
• Timely chemical control using insecticides during the flight and oviposition period of the adult wasps.
