Siberian mole

Talpa altaica

Description

The Siberian mole (Talpa altaica) is a species within the Talpidae family, known for its significant burrowing activity. Although primarily insectivorous, its role as a pest in horticulture is substantial due to the physical damage it inflicts on the landscape. Distributed throughout the Siberian and Altai regions, this mole is a hardy creature capable of altering the soil structure in a short period.

The primary damage occurs during the excavation of tunnels. As the Siberian mole digs, it disrupts the soil around the root systems of trees, shrubs, and vegetable crops. This disruption creates air gaps, causing roots to dry out and lose contact with soil moisture and nutrients. Consequently, plants may wilt, exhibit stunted growth, or die entirely if their root systems are extensively compromised.

Regarding its biology, the Siberian mole remains active throughout the year, though its surface activity is most pronounced during the spring and autumn months. Breeding occurs in early spring, and as juveniles disperse to establish their own territories, the frequency of new tunnel construction increases. This behavior often coincides with critical planting times, making gardens especially susceptible during the growing season.

A significant aspect of the mole's harmful impact is the secondary damage caused by other pests. The tunnels created by the Siberian mole act as highways for voles and other rodents that feed on roots and bulbs. Therefore, the presence of mole mounds is often an indicator that the garden may soon suffer from rodent infestation, compounding the agricultural damage to the crop.

Effective management strategies should focus on exclusion and repellence. Physical barriers such as underground wire meshes are considered the most permanent solution. Additionally, maintaining a well-managed garden with consistent soil cultivation can discourage tunnel stability. While chemical approaches are often ineffective, biological deterrents and sonic vibration devices are frequently employed by farmers to protect high-value crops.
