Caucasian mole
Talpa caucasica
Description
The Caucasian mole (Talpa caucasica) is a mammal belonging to the order Eulipotyphla and the family Talpidae. It is native to the Caucasus region and is known for its strictly subterranean lifestyle. While it primarily consumes invertebrates, its tunnel-building activities make it a challenging pest in agriculture, horticulture, and landscaping.
This mole causes damage to a variety of crops, including vegetables, ornamental plants, and tree saplings. As the mole excavates its tunnels, it frequently disrupts the root zone of plants, leaving them suspended in air pockets or causing direct mechanical injury. This leads to stunted growth, reduced yields, and even the death of young plants due to water stress and nutrient deprivation.
The biology of Talpa caucasica is defined by high metabolic activity and year-round operation, as these animals do not hibernate. They rely on an extensive network of permanent and temporary foraging tunnels. During the breeding season, they expand these systems to find mates and establish territories, which often results in increased surface activity and the creation of numerous molehills.
The primary indicators of infestation are soil mounds known as molehills, which appear suddenly on lawns and garden beds. The harm extends beyond direct physical damage; the loosened soil creates pathways for other rodents, such as voles, which often follow the mole tunnels to access and consume roots, bulbs, and tubers. This dual damage significantly impacts garden productivity and soil integrity.
Effective management requires a combination of physical and deterrent strategies. For permanent protection, burying hardware cloth or fine-mesh wire barriers around sensitive areas is the most reliable method. Mechanical traps, when placed correctly in active tunnels, can help reduce local populations. Additionally, acoustic and vibration-based repellents can discourage moles from remaining in the area, providing a non-lethal management option.
- Installation of underground wire mesh barriers.
- Placement of professional-grade mechanical traps.
- Use of electronic vibration-based repellers.
- Regular monitoring of tunnel activity levels.
