Tandonia

Description

The genus Tandonia belongs to the family Milacidae within the order Stylommatophora. These terrestrial slugs are recognized by their distinct keel along the mid-dorsal surface and their smooth, muscular bodies. They are notorious agricultural pests that thrive in diverse environments, causing significant damage to horticultural and ornamental crops worldwide.

The biology of Tandonia is heavily dependent on moisture. These mollusks are primarily nocturnal and seek refuge in cool, damp soil crevices or under plant debris during the daylight hours to prevent dehydration. Their ability to burrow deep into the soil allows them to survive adverse weather conditions, making them challenging to eradicate from affected fields.

Their life cycle typically consists of eggs laid in small clusters within moist soil or sheltered areas. These slugs are hermaphrodites, which allows them to reproduce effectively even in small, isolated populations. Once hatched, the young slugs begin feeding immediately, rapidly growing as they consume surrounding vegetation and decaying organic matter.

The damage caused by these pests is both direct and indirect. They feed on leaves, stems, and fruits, often leaving ragged holes and trails of mucus behind.

  • Consumption of seedling tissues leading to crop failure.
  • Boring into tubers and root vegetables, rendering them unmarketable.
  • Transmission of plant diseases through contaminated feeding sites.

Management strategies should focus on cultural and chemical control measures. Reducing habitat sites by clearing weeds, crop residues, and mulch helps limit their population. In severe infestations, the use of specialized molluscicides, such as ferric phosphate, is recommended as it is considered safer for the environment. Regular monitoring during damp weather remains the most effective way to prevent widespread damage.
