The Budapest slug (Tandonia budapestensis) is a land mollusk of the family Milacidae. Unlike many other slug species, this pest is characterized by its semi-subterranean lifestyle, meaning it spends a significant portion of its life cycle within the soil, utilizing pre-existing tunnels and cracks to navigate.

This species is highly polyphagous, causing significant damage to a wide range of horticultural and agricultural crops. It particularly favors potatoes, carrots, beets, and bulbs. By feeding on the internal tissues of roots and tubers, it often leaves the outer skin intact, which makes the damage invisible until harvest or storage, leading to substantial economic losses.

The biological cycle of the Budapest slug is closely linked to soil moisture and temperature. Eggs are laid in clusters within the soil, under debris, or inside moist crevices. The slugs are most active at night or during overcast, rainy weather. Under favorable conditions, they can reproduce rapidly, leading to explosive population growth in irrigated or damp agricultural fields.
