The genus Milax belongs to the family Milacidae, within the order Stylommatophora. These slugs are characterized by a prominent keel running along their dorsal side and a highly muscular body structure. Unlike some other slugs, Milax species are adept at burrowing into soil, which makes them particularly resilient and difficult to control once established in an agricultural or garden setting.

These pests act as generalist feeders, attacking a wide variety of cultivated plants. Their primary victims include root vegetables such as potatoes and carrots, leafy greens like lettuce and cabbage, and various ornamental plants. They are frequently found in greenhouses and moist vegetable gardens, where they can cause rapid and extensive defoliation or root damage.

The biological cycle of the Milax slug is heavily influenced by soil moisture levels. They are primarily nocturnal, spending daylight hours underground or under surface debris to avoid dehydration. They lay eggs in small clusters within the soil. Depending on environmental conditions, these slugs can overwinter in the soil at various life stages, emerging to feed when temperatures rise and moisture levels increase.

The damage caused by Milax is characterized by large, irregular holes in foliage and scooped-out cavities in tubers and fruits. Their feeding habits leave behind trails of sticky mucus that can serve as a breeding ground for opportunistic pathogens. Beyond direct consumption of tissue, the presence of these slugs often leads to secondary bacterial and fungal infections, rendering the crop unmarketable.

Management strategies for Milax involve an integrated approach to reduce their population. Cultural practices like clearing plant debris, removing hiding spots (such as boards or rocks), and maintaining proper soil drainage are essential. For chemical control, molluscicides based on metaldehyde or iron phosphate are commonly applied as baits. Implementing physical barriers and promoting natural predators, such as ground beetles, can further assist in population regulation.
