Description
Systematic position: the black crane fly (Tanyptera atrata) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tipulidae. It is a distinctive insect known for its elongated body and fragile, long legs, often found in temperate forest regions and woodland areas.
Host plants and damage: the larvae of this species are primarily wood-borers. They typically infest decaying or weakened hardwood trees, including birch, alder, and sometimes fruit-bearing orchard trees. By tunneling through the inner bark and decaying wood, they can exacerbate tree stress and lead to structural degradation.
Biology and life cycle: adult flies emerge during the summer months. Unlike many other pests, the adults do not cause direct damage to plants. The life cycle consists of the egg stage, several larval instars, a pupal stage, and the adult stage. The female prefers depositing eggs in moist, decaying woody material or bark crevices.
Harmfulness: although often classified as a saproxylic species (feeding on dead wood), Tanyptera atrata can act as an opportunistic pest. When trees are already weakened by environmental stress or other pathogens, the larvae can compromise the tree's health further, making it less productive or susceptible to secondary infections.
Protection measures: effective management involves maintaining tree vigor and environmental hygiene to prevent infestation.
