The grain tarsonemid mite (Tarsonemus granarius) is a member of the family Tarsonemidae, recognized primarily as a destructive pest in grain storage facilities. These microscopic arachnids are notorious for targeting the seeds and processed grain products, often going unnoticed until significant damage is already done.

This mite species infests a wide range of cereals, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. It has a high affinity for the embryo of the kernel, which makes it particularly hazardous to seed stocks, as even minor feeding activity can lead to a total loss of seed viability and germination potential.

The biological development of this mite is heavily influenced by environmental conditions within storage units. They thrive in environments with moisture levels exceeding 14-15% and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. Under these conditions, the mite population can explode rapidly, spreading through the grain mass and creating localized hotspots.

The primary damage caused by these mites includes the destruction of the grain endosperm and germ, leading to weight loss and lower product quality. Furthermore, the metabolic activity of a massive mite infestation generates moisture and heat, which encourages the growth of molds and fungi, ultimately causing the grain to spoil and clump together.
