Description
Systematic position: The Guatemalan potato moth (Tecia solanivora) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. It is recognized globally as a high-risk quarantine pest capable of causing total crop failure if introduced into new potato-growing regions.
Crops: The pest has a very restricted host range, primarily targeting the potato (Solanum tuberosum). Because the larvae feed exclusively within the tubers, the pest is easily transported across international borders through trade, making it a significant concern for phytosanitary authorities.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adult moths are nocturnal. Females lay eggs on the soil near the plant or directly on exposed tubers. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately burrow into the potato tissue, which protects them from predators and many conventional contact insecticides.
Damage and economic impact: Larvae create extensive galleries or tunnels throughout the tuber, filling them with frass. These tunnels facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, such as bacteria and fungi, causing the potato to rot completely. Losses can exceed 80% of the yield in stored potatoes if left untreated.
