Hibiscus harlequin bug

The hibiscus harlequin bug (Tectocoris diophthalmus) is a prominent member of the Scutelleridae family within the order Hemiptera. Recognizable by its vivid, iridescent colors ranging from bright orange to metallic blue or green, this insect is a well-known pest in tropical and subtropical regions where malvaceous plants are cultivated.

Its host range primarily includes plants from the Malvaceae family, with a strong preference for Hibiscus species and several Australian native trees like the bottle tree (Brachychiton). The insect's coloration acts as a warning sign to predators, indicating its distasteful nature, which allows it to thrive in open garden settings.

The lifecycle consists of egg, nymphal stages, and adult stages. Females lay clusters of eggs on stems or leaves and are notably protective, often hovering over their brood until the nymphs emerge. Nymphs typically aggregate in groups, which aids in their defense and collective feeding strategy during their development.

These bugs are sap-suckers that damage plants by piercing delicate tissues with their mouthparts. Feeding usually occurs on new growth, developing buds, and fruits. This leads to stunted growth, wilting of shoot tips, and the premature dropping of buds. Heavy infestations can significantly mar the visual aesthetic of flowering shrubs and ornamental trees.
