Description

The genus Tenodera is a member of the Mantidae family. While often viewed as beneficial predators, in specific agricultural settings, they can act as ecological disruptors. Their role in an agroecosystem is complex, as their predatory nature often results in the consumption of beneficial pollinators and biological control agents.

The lifecycle follows incomplete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females deposit eggs in protective oothecae, which are robust structures resistant to temperature fluctuations. These oothecae are typically attached to plant stems or tree branches, ensuring the next generation survives the winter and emerges in sync with early spring insect activity.

Their impact is primarily characterized by the indiscriminate hunting of insect fauna. By predating on bees, lacewings, and parasitic wasps, they inadvertently support the population growth of primary plant pests like aphids or spider mites. This predatory behavior can significantly diminish the effectiveness of Integrated Pest Management programs.

The threat to crops is not through direct herbivory, but through the depletion of biodiversity necessary for crop productivity. In greenhouse environments, high densities of Tenodera can lead to a drastic reduction in pollination rates, resulting in poor fruit set and reduced yields for sensitive horticultural crops.
