Tersilochus fulvipes

Description

Tersilochus fulvipes is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Ichneumonidae. It acts primarily as a biological control agent, specifically targeting larvae of various weevils that infest cruciferous plants, such as the cabbage seed weevil (Ceutorhynchus pallidactylus).

The adult parasitoid is small, usually measuring 3 to 4 millimeters in length, with a dark body and distinct yellow legs. Its lifecycle is highly synchronized with the developmental stages of its host and the phenology of the host plant. They emerge in the spring, feeding on floral resources before seeking hosts to oviposit their eggs.

The development of the parasite occurs within the host larva, which is typically found inside the pods or stems of host plants. The wasp larva consumes the host from within, effectively stopping the damage the weevil would otherwise cause to the plant. The final stages of the parasitoid's development usually take place in the soil after the host has migrated there for pupation.

While Tersilochus fulvipes is beneficial, its population is highly vulnerable to conventional agricultural practices. The overuse of broad-spectrum insecticides on oilseed rape fields during the flowering stage can devastate local populations of this parasitoid, leading to an ecological imbalance that may favor pest outbreaks in subsequent seasons.

Effective management strategies to preserve this natural enemy include:

  • Implementing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to minimize chemical exposure.
  • Monitoring the timing of insecticide applications to avoid the peak flight periods of the wasps.
  • Choosing selective pesticides that demonstrate lower toxicity to hymenopteran parasitoids.
  • Maintaining field margins and biodiversity to support the survival and reproduction of beneficial insects.
