Giant click beetle

Tetralobus flabellicornis is a species of click beetle belonging to the Elateridae family, order Coleoptera. This beetle is notable for its impressive size and the distinct flabellate (fan-shaped) antennae characteristic of the males. Native primarily to regions of Africa, it occupies a significant niche as a soil-dwelling pest in agricultural ecosystems.

The primary economic damage is caused by the larvae, commonly known as wireworms. These soil-dwelling stages feed on the roots, tubers, and underground stems of various crops. The pest is particularly problematic for young plantings, as the larvae consume the developing root systems, leading to stunted growth or the complete death of the plant.

The biological cycle of Tetralobus flabellicornis is extended and entirely subterranean. After the eggs hatch, the larvae undergo several molts while living in the soil, feeding on roots and organic matter. This multi-year lifecycle allows the population to remain established in the soil for long periods, making them difficult to eradicate with simple contact insecticides.

Damage symptoms are often characterized by erratic germination and localized wilting of plants in the field. The feeding activity creates entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, leading to root rot and systemic plant health issues. Farmers frequently observe patches of dying crops where the wireworm population density is highest.

Effective control measures focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Cultural practices such as crop rotation, deep tillage, and maintaining proper soil drainage are essential for reducing wireworm survival. In cases of heavy infestation, seed treatments with systemic insecticides or the application of soil-incorporated granules provide necessary protection during the critical early growth phases.
