Description

Systematic position: Tetraneura nigriabdomonalis belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Aphididae. It is a heteroecious aphid species that requires two different hosts to complete its complex annual life cycle.

Host plants: The primary host for this species is the elm tree (Ulmus spp.), where it induces leaf galls. The secondary hosts consist of various grasses and cereal crops, such as rice, sorghum, and millet, where the aphid colonizes the root systems during the warmer months.

Biology and life cycle: The aphid overwinters as eggs in the crevices of elm bark. In spring, stem mothers hatch and induce galls on elm leaves. Later generations develop wings and migrate to the roots of grasses and cereals to feed and reproduce. Before winter, sexual forms return to the primary host to lay overwintering eggs.

Damage patterns and economic importance: On elm trees, the aphid causes leaf curling and gall formation, impacting tree health. However, the most significant agricultural impact occurs on cereal crops. By clustering on the roots, the aphids extract sap, causing stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and significant yield reductions in infested fields.

Protection measures: Managing this pest is challenging due to its subterranean life stage. Integrated pest management strategies include:

  • Maintaining spatial distance between elm tree plantings and cereal fields.
  • Strict weed control to eliminate alternative habitats for the aphid.
