Carmine spider mite

Tetranychus cinnabarinus

Description

The carmine spider mite (Tetranychus cinnabarinus) is a destructive pest belonging to the family Tetranychidae within the order Acariformes. These microscopic arachnids are notorious for their ability to damage plants by piercing cell walls and extracting fluids, which can devastate both greenhouse and open-field agricultural production.

This mite has a broad host range, feeding on hundreds of plant species. Significant infestations are commonly found on solanaceous vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants), strawberries, and various ornamental crops. Due to its polyphagous nature, it remains a constant threat to biodiversity and economic stability in modern horticulture.

The life cycle of the carmine spider mite is accelerated by high temperatures and low humidity, with generation times often lasting less than two weeks in optimal conditions. Females exhibit a distinct red or carmine color during their overwintering phase, allowing them to remain viable in soil crevices, debris, or greenhouse structures until favorable conditions return.

Initial signs of damage typically appear as small chlorotic spots (stippling) on the underside of leaves. As the population density increases, these spots coalesce, leading to necrotic lesions, leaf drop, and overall plant decline. The characteristic fine webbing produced by the mites further inhibits growth and reduces the marketability of crops by covering leaves and fruit.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Cultural practices, such as maintaining higher humidity, removing infested plant material, and controlling weeds, serve as the first line of defense. When chemical intervention is required, growers should utilize targeted acaricides, ensuring a rotation of products to manage potential pesticide resistance effectively.

  • Monitor leaf undersides regularly for colonies.
  • Maintain optimal soil and air moisture levels.
  • Introduce biological control agents like predatory mites.
  • Remove and destroy highly infested plant parts.
  • Apply specific acaricides at early infestation stages.
