Description

Tetraopes is a genus of beetles belonging to the Cerambycidae family, commonly known as longhorn beetles. These insects are distinguished by their striking red or orange color with black spots, which is an aposematic signal indicating their toxicity to potential predators in their natural environment.

These beetles are primarily associated with plants of the genus Asclepias, commonly known as milkweed. While they are a natural component of ecosystems, they can become pests in fields where milkweed is intentionally cultivated for fiber, medicinal purposes, or as a host plant for pollinators, as they feed on the leaves and stems of the crop.

The life cycle of Tetraopes involves the female depositing eggs on the lower stems or crown of the host plant. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the stems or roots, feeding on the inner tissues. This internal feeding activity often goes unnoticed until significant damage to the vascular system of the plant has already occurred.

The damage caused by these beetles includes stunted growth, wilting of the shoots, and reduced biomass production. In severe infestations, the structural integrity of the plant is compromised, leading to premature senescence or death of the host. Additionally, entry points created by the larvae can facilitate the secondary colonization by fungal pathogens.

Management strategies for Tetraopes include both cultural and chemical approaches. Cultural control involves removing and destroying infested plant material to reduce the population of larvae before they complete their development. For high-value crops, chemical control using targeted insecticides during the adult beetle flight period is recommended to prevent egg-laying and further damage.
