Description
Taxonomic position. The species belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. It is a specialized herbivore that has evolved to feed exclusively on plants within the Asclepias genus.
Host plants. The primary host plant for this beetle is the common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca). While often considered a niche pest, it can cause significant damage in areas where milkweed is cultivated for its fibers, as a source of nectar for pollinators, or in ornamental landscapes.
Biology and life cycle. The adult beetle is easily recognized by its bright red body with black spots. The life cycle involves mating in the summer, after which females deposit eggs at the base of host plants. The larvae hatch and burrow into the roots, where they complete their development, often overwintering in the soil.
Nature of damage. Larval feeding inside the roots is the most destructive phase, often resulting in stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and increased susceptibility to environmental stress. Adults feed on the foliage and stems, though this generally results in aesthetic damage rather than total crop failure.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) for this beetle includes mechanical control, such as removing infested rootstocks and controlling wild milkweed stands. In severe infestations, chemical control using systemic insecticides applied to the base of the plant can be effective in reducing larval populations before they penetrate the roots.
