Description
The brown spruce longhorn beetle (Tetropium cinnamopterum) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the family Cerambycidae. It is recognized as a significant pest of spruce trees (Picea species), predominantly targeting stressed, damaged, or recently fallen timber in forest ecosystems.
The biology of this species is characterized by a development cycle that typically spans one or two years. Adult beetles emerge in early summer. After mating, females deposit their eggs into bark crevices, allowing the hatching larvae to immediately penetrate the protective outer layer of the tree.
Larval development occurs in the phloem and cambium layers, where the insects create elaborate galleries that disrupt the vascular system of the tree. This feeding behavior significantly reduces the tree's health, often leading to crown thinning, needle discoloration, and eventual tree mortality.
