Systematic position: The spruce longhorn beetle (Tetropium staudingeri) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. It is a wood-boring insect that targets coniferous tree species, particularly spruce, causing significant ecological and economic impact in forest ecosystems and nurseries.

Host plants: This pest primarily infests various species of spruce. It is frequently found in mountain forest zones where it colonizes weakened, wind-thrown, or senescent trees. In managed landscapes, it can also attack stressed ornamental trees, especially those suffering from drought or soil compaction.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of this longhorn beetle is closely associated with the trunk tissue. Adults typically emerge during the summer months to mate. Females then deposit eggs in bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the phloem and cambium layers, creating irregular tunnels. Pupation eventually takes place within the sapwood, and the next generation emerges as adults after chewing through the bark.

Damage symptoms and harmfulness: The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which feed on the tree's vascular system, preventing the transport of water and nutrients. As a result, the tree shows signs of chlorosis, crown thinning, and eventual mortality. Circular exit holes on the bark and piles of frass around the base of the trunk are definitive signs of a severe infestation.

Control measures: Managing populations of Tetropium staudingeri requires integrated pest management practices.
