Description

The velvet longhorn beetle (Tetropium velutinum) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the family Cerambycidae. It is recognized as a significant pest of coniferous forests, particularly in North America, where it targets various species of fir and spruce, contributing to tree decline and timber degradation.

The beetle primarily infests stressed, damaged, or recently fallen trees, but during population outbreaks, it can also attack healthy, mature conifers. Its presence is most noted in spruce (Picea) stands, where the larvae feed on the cambium layer, causing structural damage to the conductive tissues of the tree.

The life cycle of Tetropium velutinum generally spans one year. Adult beetles emerge in late spring or summer to mate and lay eggs in bark crevices. Once the larvae hatch, they bore into the inner bark and eventually into the wood, creating irregular feeding galleries that can girdle and kill the host tree within a few seasons.

Typical signs of an infestation include the accumulation of reddish-brown frass at the base of the tree or in bark fissures. Additionally, as the tree's vascular system is compromised, the foliage gradually turns pale and eventually dies, starting from the crown. Visible exit holes, typically oval-shaped, are often found on the bark surface as adults emerge.

Effective management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices to reduce beetle populations. Key approaches include:

  • Prompt removal and processing of infested or windthrown trees.
  • Regular sanitation logging to prevent population build-up.
  • Monitoring adult flight activity using pheromone traps.
  • Promoting forest health to increase the resistance of standing trees.
