Tetrops is a genus of beetles belonging to the longhorn beetle family (Cerambycidae) within the order Coleoptera. These small wood-boring insects are significant pests in orchards and gardens, particularly known for their ability to damage the thin, young branches of various fruit-bearing trees. Their activity is often cryptic, making early detection a key challenge for orchardists.

The primary hosts of Tetrops species, such as Tetrops praeustus, include apple, pear, plum, cherry, and apricot trees. Occasionally, they can be found on ornamental trees and hawthorns. The damage caused by the larvae restricts the transport of nutrients and water, which negatively impacts the overall growth vigor and longevity of the affected branches.

The life cycle of the beetle involves an egg-laying stage on young shoots during the spring flowering period. Once the larvae emerge, they bore into the pith of the twigs and continue feeding throughout the summer months. The larval stage involves significant development within the shoot, typically requiring a period that spans through part of the growing season or even an entire year.

Infestation symptoms manifest as the wilting and eventual drying out of the terminals of young shoots, often during late spring or early summer. If the affected twig is split open, the larval gallery, filled with frass, is clearly visible. This damage is particularly detrimental to young saplings, where the loss of the central leader or key lateral branches can compromise the tree's architecture.
