Dull-headed longhorn beetle

The dull-headed longhorn beetle (Tetrops praeusta) is a small wood-boring insect belonging to the family Cerambycidae and the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles measure approximately 3 to 4 mm in length. They are characterized by a black head and pronotum, combined with brownish-yellow elytra that feature a distinct black apical spot, making it a recognizable species for orchard management.

This beetle is primarily known for attacking a variety of fruit-bearing trees. It frequently targets members of the Rosaceae family, including apple, pear, plum, cherry, and apricot trees. Beyond cultivated orchards, it is commonly found on wild shrubs such as hawthorn and blackthorn, which serve as natural reservoirs for the pest, allowing it to migrate easily into managed gardens.

The biological cycle is closely tied to the host plant's tissues. Females deposit eggs near buds or under the bark of young shoots. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the sapwood, feeding on the cambium and the phloem. This tunneling activity disrupts the tree's vascular system, leading to weakened growth, yellowing foliage, and the eventual dieback of infested twigs.

The damage caused by Tetrops praeusta can be severe, especially in young orchards or nurseries. By destroying the tips of branches and affecting the development of new growth, the beetle reduces the overall vitality of the tree and diminishes its reproductive capacity. Heavy infestations often result in stunted growth and a significant reduction in fruit quality and yield over successive seasons.

Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Pruning and destroying infested twigs during the dormant season is a critical control measure to reduce the overwintering population. In orchards with a history of infestation, applying systemic insecticides during the peak adult flight period, typically around the time of bud burst and flowering, can prevent further damage to the canopy.
