Description

The six-striped leafhopper (Tettigella sexlineata) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its ability to cause severe damage to various crops by extracting sap and transmitting plant pathogens.

This pest primarily targets cereal crops, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Its ability to feed on a wide variety of grasses allows it to thrive in diverse environments, often migrating from fallow lands or field margins into cultivated agricultural fields during the spring and summer seasons.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and an adult stage. Overwintering typically occurs in the egg stage, deposited within the plant tissues of perennial grasses. As temperatures rise in the spring, nymphs emerge and begin feeding immediately, progressing through their developmental stages while causing cumulative damage to the crop.

The damage caused by Tettigella sexlineata is twofold. Direct damage results from sap extraction, which leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and leaf necrosis.
