False codling moth

The false codling moth (Thaumatotibia leucotreta) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is considered a major quarantine pest globally due to its potential to cause severe economic losses in both commercial fruit production and agricultural commodity trade.

This insect is highly polyphagous, attacking more than 70 different host plant species. Key crops at risk include citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, grapefruit), stone fruits (peaches, nectarines), macadamia nuts, avocados, peppers, and various field crops like cotton and maize. Its ability to infest a diverse range of hosts makes it a difficult pest to contain.

The life cycle of the false codling moth consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Depending on the ambient temperature, the duration of the life cycle varies significantly. In optimal tropical and subtropical climates, the moth can be active throughout the year, producing multiple overlapping generations, which complicates control efforts.

Damage is caused primarily by the larval stage, which bores into the fruit to feed on the pulp. This behavior results in premature fruit drop and makes the produce highly susceptible to secondary pathogens such as rots and molds. The internal nature of the infestation makes visual inspection difficult, which is a major concern for international phytosanitary authorities.

Management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM) practices to reduce population levels. Key approaches include the deployment of pheromone traps for monitoring and mating disruption, the use of biological control agents like Cryptophlebia leucotreta granulovirus (CrGV), and rigorous orchard sanitation by collecting and destroying infested fruit to prevent the next generation's emergence.
