The Pine Processionary Moth (latin Thaumetopoea pinivora) is a significant pest of pine forests, belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Notodontidae. This species is highly specialized, and its larvae are known for their destructive impact on pine trees, causing extensive defoliation across affected forest stands.

The primary host for this pest is the Scots pine. The moths prefer young to middle-aged pine plantations, particularly those located on sandy soils. High population densities of this species can lead to significant forest decline, as the repeated loss of needles suppresses tree growth and makes them susceptible to secondary attacks by wood-boring insects.

The life cycle of the moth consists of one generation per year. Pupation occurs in the soil, where the insects remain overwintering in tough cocoons. Adult moths emerge in the summer to lay eggs on the needles. The larvae, once hatched, live in communal silk nests and move in distinct columns, or "processions," to feed on the foliage at night, returning to their nests during the day.
