The most economically significant species is Thorictodes heydeni, which is widely recognized as a serious pest of stored products, commonly found in warehouses, mills, and grain storage facilities worldwide.

Crops and damage profile. This pest primarily targets stored grains, including wheat, rice, corn, and barley, as well as processed products such as flour and various cereals. Unlike some other pests that target healthy kernels, Thorictodes often thrives in environments where grain is already partially damaged or where storage conditions are poor, contributing significantly to post-harvest losses.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Thorictodes includes egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. These insects are particularly well-adapted to indoor environments where temperature and humidity remain stable. They are known for their ability to reproduce rapidly in accumulated dust and organic debris in hard-to-reach areas of storage facilities, making them difficult to eradicate once an infestation is established.
