Description
Systematic position. Thyestilla gebleri is a species of longhorn beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae, within the order Coleoptera. This insect is recognized as a significant pest in agricultural entomology, particularly in regions where soybean cultivation is a primary economic activity.
Host plants. The primary host for this pest is soybean (Glycine max). The beetle exhibits high host specificity, focusing its developmental cycle on the stems of these plants. It can also be found on certain leguminous weeds, which serve as alternative food sources and refuges for the population during off-seasons.
Biology and life cycle. The adult beetles typically emerge in mid-summer. Following mating, females lay eggs inside the stem tissues of soybean plants. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the stem, creating tunnels within the pith. The larva remains inside the stem throughout its growth period, eventually pupating within the stalk before emerging as an adult in the next season.
Damage and harmfulness. The damage is primarily caused by the larval stage feeding within the stem. By consuming the internal tissues, larvae disrupt the plant's nutrient and water circulation. Symptoms include stunted growth, wilting, and discoloration. Heavily infested stems lose their structural integrity, making them susceptible to lodging and breaking, which leads to significant yield losses.
Control measures. Managing this pest is challenging due to the internal nature of the larval feeding. Recommended strategies include:
- Crop rotation to break the life cycle of the pest.
- Thorough destruction of soybean stubble and harvest residues to eliminate overwintering pupae.
- Timely application of systemic insecticides during the peak activity period of adult beetles.
- Use of resistant soybean varieties with thicker, more lignified stems to hinder larval boring.
