Conjugated crane fly
Tipula conjugata
Description
Taxonomic position and description. Tipula conjugata is a member of the Diptera order, specifically the Tipulidae family, commonly known as crane flies. These insects are distinguished by their long, spindly legs and delicate appearance. While adult crane flies are harmless to crops, their larvae, often referred to as leatherjackets, are notorious soil-dwelling pests that cause significant economic damage in agricultural settings.
Susceptible crops. This pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plant species. It primarily targets cereals, vegetable crops, and young seedlings in nurseries or lawns. Moist soil conditions serve as a prime habitat for the larvae, making crops planted in low-lying, damp areas particularly susceptible to infestations.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Tipula conjugata consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically oviposit in moist, organic-rich soil. Once hatched, the larvae live in the upper soil layers, where they feed voraciously on roots and rhizomes. The development period can span several months to years, depending on environmental factors like moisture levels and soil temperature.
Character of damage and economic importance. Larval feeding damage is subterranean, which makes detection challenging until visible plant symptoms occur. The larvae chew through the roots and stems near the soil surface, leading to wilting, stunted growth, and eventually the death of the plant. Large infestations can result in patchy crop emergence and significant reductions in yield, especially during early growth phases.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling crane fly populations. Effective strategies include improving soil drainage to make the environment less hospitable and practicing timely tillage to expose larvae to natural predators. Crop rotation is also a highly effective method to break the pest cycle. In severe cases, soil-applied insecticides or seed treatments containing appropriate active ingredients may be necessary.
