Yellow-striped crane fly
Tipula flavolineata
Description
Taxonomic position. The yellow-striped crane fly (Tipula flavolineata) is a member of the order Diptera and the family Tipulidae. These insects are commonly found in meadows, woodlands, and agricultural areas where soil moisture is relatively high and organic matter content is sufficient for larval development.
Host plants and damage. This pest primarily threatens the root systems of agricultural crops, garden plants, and turf. The larvae, often referred to as leatherjackets, dwell in the soil and consume underground tissues, including roots, root hairs, and the base of stalks. This feeding behavior causes plants to become stunted, wilt, and eventually die, leading to significant yield loss.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. While the adults resemble large mosquitoes and are harmless to plants, the larvae are the destructive stage. They typically overwinter in the soil and resume intense feeding in the spring as soil temperatures rise, often causing the most severe damage during the early seedling stage of crops.
Economic impact. The severity of the infestation is strongly correlated with soil moisture levels. Fields with poor drainage or excessive mulch and crop debris are more prone to high larval populations. When infestations are heavy, the economic loss can be severe, as the larvae destroy the plant's foundation, making it impossible for the plant to absorb necessary water and nutrients.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Recommended practices include:
- Executing deep fall tillage to expose larvae to birds and drying conditions.
- Maintaining effective field drainage to reduce the attractiveness of the soil for egg-laying.
- Implementing weed control to reduce habitats that larvae prefer.
- Applying registered soil-applied insecticides if scouting reveals populations exceeding economic thresholds.
