Broad-margined crane fly

The broad-margined crane fly (Tipula latemarginata) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tipulidae. These insects are easily recognized by their long, spindly legs and resemble giant mosquitoes. While the adults are harmless to crops, the larval stage, often referred to as leatherjackets, is a significant agricultural pest found in soil.

This pest affects a variety of plant species, particularly cereals, maize, potatoes, and turf grasses. They thrive in damp, moist soil environments, making them particularly destructive in regions with high precipitation or poor drainage. The larvae are subterranean feeders, which allows them to remain undetected until significant damage is already done.

The biology of the species is centered around the soil environment. After mating, females deposit eggs into the soil surface or turf. Upon hatching, the larvae spend their development time feeding on plant roots and crowns. They typically go through several instars, with the most aggressive feeding period occurring during the spring months as soil temperatures rise.

The damage caused by larvae includes the destruction of root systems and tunneling into the stems of young plants. Affected plants typically show signs of yellowing and stunted growth before ultimately dying. In severe infestations, large areas of crops or lawns may fail completely, resulting in economic losses for farmers and land managers.

Control measures emphasize cultural practices and chemical interventions. Improving field drainage is a critical step, as larvae favor waterlogged soil. Deep cultivation or plowing can expose larvae to predators and desiccation. If infestations exceed the economic threshold, the application of targeted soil insecticides or seed treatments may be necessary to protect the emerging crop.
