Common Crane Fly

Tipula obsoleta

Description

Systematic position. Tipula obsoleta belongs to the order Diptera, family Tipulidae. These insects are commonly known as crane flies or daddy longlegs. Despite their intimidating appearance, they are harmless to humans and domestic animals as adults, as they do not possess the mouthparts to bite or sting.

Host crops and impact. The agricultural significance of this species lies in its larval stage. These larvae, often referred to as leatherjackets, are notorious for feeding on the roots and underground stems of various plants. They frequently infest pastures, cereal crops, vegetable gardens, and turfgrass, causing severe stand thinning and economic losses for farmers and turf managers.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis. Adults typically emerge in late summer and autumn to mate and lay eggs in damp, vegetation-rich soil. The eggs hatch into larvae that remain in the soil, feeding on organic matter and living roots throughout their developmental stages. They overwinter as larvae, resuming active feeding and growth when soil temperatures rise in the spring.

Nature of damage. Larval damage is often overlooked until significant plant death occurs. As larvae consume the root systems, the plants lose their ability to take up nutrients and water. This manifests as chlorosis, wilting, and patchiness in crops or lawns. The larvae are most active near the soil surface during damp nights, where they sever stems, leading to the rapid collapse of young seedlings.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Tipula obsoleta. Key strategies include:

  • Improving soil drainage, as high moisture levels favor larval survival and activity.
  • Executing mechanical cultivation, which disturbs the soil habitat and exposes larvae to birds and desiccation.
  • Maintaining healthy, vigorous plant growth to help the crop withstand moderate pest pressure.
  • Applying biological controls, such as entomopathogenic nematodes (e.g., Steinernema feltiae), which provide an effective and environmentally friendly solution for larval suppression.
