Description
Systematic position: Tipula subnodicornis belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tipulidae. This species is typically found in moist environments, and its larvae, often referred to as leatherjackets, are known to cause economic losses in agricultural fields situated on drained peatlands or poorly drained soil.
Crops damaged: This pest is a polyphage, meaning it feeds on a wide range of plants. The most significant damage is observed in cereals such as winter wheat and barley. Additionally, grasslands, potatoes, vegetable crops, and nursery seedlings are highly susceptible to larval feeding, which targets the roots and stem bases of young plants.
Biology and life cycle: The species has one generation per year. Adults emerge in late spring or early summer. Females deposit eggs directly into the soil, preferring habitats with dense vegetation and high moisture levels. Larvae go through several instars, feeding on underground plant tissues both during the autumn and following spring months.
Character of damage and harmfulness: Larvae inhabit the upper layers of the soil, remaining hidden from view. They sever plant roots and stems just below the soil surface, resulting in wilting and plant death. Damage is most severe in the spring, as the rapidly growing larvae require more food, often causing noticeable bare patches in otherwise uniform crop stands.
Protection measures: Effective management requires a combination of agrotechnical and chemical strategies. Improving field drainage is critical to reduce habitat suitability for the larvae. Crop rotation and the control of perennial weeds help break the life cycle. In scenarios with high pest pressure, the application of authorized soil insecticides or seed treatments is necessary to prevent significant yield losses.
