Description
Systematic position. The palm shoot borer (Tirathaba rufivena) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is recognized as a significant pest in tropical agriculture, particularly affecting palm species grown for commercial oil and fruit production across Southeast Asia and the Pacific regions.
Host plants. The primary hosts for this species are the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) and the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). The pest demonstrates a high preference for the male and female inflorescences, targeting the plant during its most vulnerable reproductive phases.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the inflorescences or young fruits. The larvae undergo several instars while feeding, webbing flowers and debris together. Pupation occurs within the protected environment of the infested floral tissue, and the duration of the cycle is closely tied to the ambient tropical temperature and moisture.
Nature of damage. The larvae are the main destructive stage, causing direct damage by consuming floral tissues. This feeding behavior prevents successful pollination and leads to the shedding of flowers. If young fruits are infested, they become malformed, rot due to secondary fungal infections, and lose their market value, directly impacting overall plantation yield.
Protection measures. Effective management of Tirathaba rufivena requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include regular monitoring of inflorescence infestation levels and the removal of heavily damaged bunches to limit larval populations. Biological control agents, including parasitic wasps and Bacillus thuringiensis sprays, are highly recommended to keep populations below economic injury levels without disrupting the plantation ecosystem.
